Areas of Interest
Salcombe -
very popular and attractive town with beaches, pubs, shopping, dingy sailing, river and fishing trips
Dartmouth -
charming town on the mouth of the River Dart with river trips, shopping and restaurants - visit by passenger ferry to the castle highly recommended
Kingsbridge -
situated at the head of the estuary, useful for all the everyday shopping and facilities, and a good cinema - The Reel.
Further afield there is also the coastal city of Plymouth with the National Marine Aquarium, historic Barbican area and the Hoe, and heading inland there is the National Park at Dartmoor (about an hour's drive) and the historic town of Totnes (about 45 minutes away).

Family Activities
Learn to sail at the Island Cruising Club or Salcombe Dinghy School
Hire a boat with whitestrand boat hire (there are several other hire companies in Salcombe)
Fishing Trips out of Salcombe with Phoenix Charters or with Anglo Dawn III
(again there are others to try), or river trip with the Rivermaid ferry or the ferry to South Sands
A trip to the surfing beaches at Bantham or Bigbury, with a tractor ride across the causeway at high tide to the Pilchard Inn at Burgh Island
Woodlands Theme Park, near Dartmouth

The shop in East Prawle is good for the basics, and also has newspapers, bread and quite a few extras, well worth a visit. There is a bakery and grocery in Frogmore, a butchers in Chillington and Torcross, a farm shop (with butchers) at Stokenham, and the excellent Ashby's general store at Charleton garage (also with an extensive shop selling outdoor clothing and sports equipment). You can also buy fish from Britannia Shellfish on the beach at Beesands. Please support the local shops as much as you possibly can, if you need to do a more extensive shop Kingsbridge has a fairly good range.
